Long-term care, retirement home workers picket Ontario employer in fight for fair deal

Long-term care and retirement home workers and members of Local 9211-14 at The Palace Alexandria are picketing the facility today to bring awareness to their efforts to negotiate a fair deal that reflects their service.

The 80 essential workers have faced a multitude of challenges in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic as they have cared for vulnerable residents at the private, for-profit facility in Alexandria, Ont., with 70 long-term care beds and 36 retirement home beds.

Management has demanded concessions including cuts to sick pay and sick time accumulation, which would bring even more instability to work schedules already weakened by chronic short staffing.
