Recently, USW members in Texas, Ohio and California have been fighting for fairness, and our allies in Congress are showing their support.
- U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown came out to support USW Local 3057 members who went on strike at ArcelorMittal on October 31. A tentative agreement was secured on November 9 and then ratified a few days later with numerous improvements including guaranteed time off and increases in wages, health care and pensions.
- Supporting the 32,000 health care workers represented by various unions, including the USW, who authorized a strike against Kaiser Permanente in California, eight U.S. Senators and more than 30 members of the U.S. House of Representatives sent letters to the company urging good faith as a new contract was being negotiated. In the weeks following the letters, Kaiser did return to the negotiating table, and Local 7600 – which represents USW members at Kaiser – was able to finalize a tentative agreement that was subsequently passed with 95 percent support.
- During a Congressional hearing in November, Representative Andy Levin (MI-9), grilled ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods about the company’s use of replacement workers after its unfair labor practice lockout of some 660 USW members in Beaumont, Texas. This lockout has persisted since May 1, 2021.
