Social Media Tips

General Guidelines

Create a clear, authentic account representing yourself or your union local. Your bio and profile photo should make your identity and role obvious.
Tag elected officials (@Handle) when you want to directly notify them and their followers.
Comment on their posts to publicly join conversations, show support, ask questions, or hold them accountable.
Be respectful but firm. Keep your posts clear, issue-focused, and professional. Call out actions or votes, not personal traits.
Use hashtags to connect your message with broader conversations.
Post during key moments – before legislative votes, public hearings, town halls, or campaign events.
Share personal and community stories that show how legislation affects working people. Officials and their staff pay more attention to specific, relatable stories.
Like, share, and amplify messages from allies to strengthen visibility and public pressure.

Different Types of Accounts for Elected Officials

Official Government Account
@SenatorJaneDoe

Managed by government staff. Shares policy, public services, official statements. Best for policy advocacy, constituent requests, and public accountability.

Official accounts often mention their government office in their bio (e.g. “U.S. Senator for [State]”), link to an official.gov page, and share policy-related posts.

Campaign Account
@JaneDoeForSenate

Managed by campaign staff. Focuses on election updates, endorsements, campaign promises.

Campaign accounts mention candidate status and link to campaign sites or donation pages.

Personal/Private Account
@JaneDoe

Run personally or by trusted staff. Mix of personal content, opinions, occasional political commentary. Less formal, not an official government source.

Personal accounts are more casual, sometimes verified, and mix personal content with political views.

Different Social Media Platforms

Twitter/X	Fast, public, real-time advocacy, tagging officials	Most direct platform for advocacy. Officials and staff monitor closely.
Facebook	Local organizing, community posts, commenting on official pages	Good for extended messages group organizing, and community event promotion.
Instagram	Visual storytelling, solidarity photos, reels, and stories	Great for rally photos, infographics, or personal story videos. Tagging works well in stories and captions.
Threads	Issue conversations, curated advocacy discussions	Smaller, growing audience. Better for dialogue than rapid advocacy.
TikTok	Viral videos, awareness campaigns, youth outreach	Less direct advocacy to officials, but strong for public pressure and awareness campaigns.
BlueSky	Emerging platform for issue conversations, less crowded, community-focused discussions	A new, community-driven platform for more focused, issue-based dialogue.
