2024 District 1 WOS Scholarship Winners

United Steelworkers District 1 Women of Steel Scholarship Committee met Thursday, June 27th to select the 2024 scholarship recipients. Twenty-one (21) applications were reviewed by the Committee before they randomly selected winners from the eligible applicants.

District 1 Women of Steel Scholarships were awarded as follows:

Academic Scholarships ($2,000 each):

  • Lillian Howdyshell, daughter of James Howdyshell, Akron, OH, Local 2 L
  • Hunter Smith, son of Gregory Smith, Canton, OH, Local 1123

Technical Scholarship ($1,500 each):

  • Lilly Swetich, daughter of Lucas Swetich, Ishpeming, MI, Local 4950

The Committee members are Sara Benedict, Christy Collins, Karen Halladay, Vickie Stage and Teresa Cassady and Tonya DeVore, Coordinators

The USW in Ohio - A Proud History

The USW has a proud and long-standing relationship with the 70,000 members in represents in Ohio – from the steel mills of the North Shore of Lake Erie to the brass producers in the far northwest corner of the State to the school district employees in Muskingum County to the utility workers in Cincinnati and the coke plant workers in Haverhill.

Our workers in District 1 include hospital employees at Akron General Medical Center, paper mill workers in Chillicothe, nuclear services workers in Piketon, oil refinery workers in Toledo as well as tire makers at Goodyear, Firestone and Cooper, and staff members at the Stark County Department of Job and Family Services.

We’re also proud to say we represent the steelworkers at ArcelorMittal, WCI, Timken, REP, US Steel, AK Steel and Esmark (Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel).
