Steelworkers Persuade a Dozen Indiana Towns to Oppose TPP

A growing number of local governments, at the urging of Steelworkers, are coming out against the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal.

The United Steelworkers (USW) union has convinced more than a dozen municipal government councils across Northwest Indiana, including Lake County, Hobart County, Munster County and others, to vote for resolutions opposing the 12-nation pact, which Steelworkers oppose because they say it would result in the loss of jobs.

The town and city councils are realizing that the TPP is not a political party issue, but an issue of economic justice for communities across America fighting against unfair and illegal trade. It is important that Steelworkers keep lobbying officials to pass resolutions opposing TPP and to make leaders realize how devastating the deal will be to the American economy.  Job losses to countries like Vietnam with a minimum wage of $.65 per hour would create a race to the bottom.

Remember, TPP is “NAFTA on steroids,” and Americans have all have felt the ripple effect that trade deal had on our jobs and communities, like our brothers and sisters at Carrier in Indianapolis right now.

The time to stand up and fight back is now before it is too late!

We cannot accept illegal trade or bad trade agreements. We must demand fair trade from Congress and enforcement of our trade laws!

Call your U.S. Representative and U.S. Senators to STOP TPP.
