ASARCO Bargaining to Resume Mid-October
U.S. Seeks Panel to Review Case against Grupo Mexico
Our unions’ proposal to provide immediate, reasonable wage increases to members, as outlined in our last issue of Solidarity News, was rejected by ASARCO management on August 23, 2023.
The unions will be meeting with ASARCO again for negotiations on October 17 and 18, 2023, in Mesa, Arizona. The unions offered numerous earlier dates to return to the table, but management was unfortunately unavailable.
On August 22, 2023, United States Trade Representative (USTR) Katherine Tai announced that the U.S. had requested a Rapid Response Mechanism panel concerning allegations that workers at Grupo Mexico’s San Martin mine have been denied their freedom of association and collective bargaining rights.
For more information, read the news release from the USTR at: https://ustr.gov/about-us/policy-offices/press-office/press-releases/2023/august/united-states-requests-first-ever-usmca-rapid-response-labor-mechanism-panel-grupo-mexico-mine
The three-member panel has been constituted and has requested information from Mexico.
