Local 309 Membership Update: July 25, 2024

This week we’ve been working to finalize several Mini-Arb dates in September. The cases that we will be taking are all centered around the company violating the Contracting Out process. We will keep everyone updated on the dates and status of the cases.

The Union is going to be selling pens (500) for $20 each. With each pen you will be given a free ticket that will be entered into a drawing. There will be 3 tickets drawn, 1st will win $500, 2nd will win $1500, and 3rd will win $3000. As of now the drawing is set for 10/12/2024. All the other proceeds will be donated to Alcoa High School’s baseball team towards their new fence. The local will have a permanent sign hanging on the fence for our donation.

We’ve started distributing the pens out with reps of each department. If for some reason you can’t find anyone selling them, please contact Ronnie Amos (865) 363-4440 or Nick McCarter (865) 254-6252, and we will get you some ASAP.

Here are some of the events a few of our committees have planned:

This week all the Union’s top safety leaders have completed 30 hours of OSHA training. This training will be very beneficial going forward to help us in shoring up so many of the gaps that the company has allowed to open over the past several years. We are working with the trainers to start setting up the next rounds now. Hoping to start having these types of trainings quarterly.

Seems the company has been really dropping the ball when it comes to probationary employees’ evaluations. Remember that they should have a rep present with them for each of their 2 evaluations. If you’re a probationary employee, please be sure to ask for representation during your evaluation. If you’ve not had an evaluation by day 40 (1st evaluation) or day 70 (2nd evaluation), please get with your department chair or plant chair. If there are probationary employees in your department, please help look out for this and help them through the process. Department/Plant Chairs can’t be every where and talking to everyone, so we really need some help making sure these brothers and sisters are being treated fairly.

As always please be keeping track of your grievances and getting them pushed up to the next level.

Thanks for all that you all do and stay safe.
