Crisis Averted (For Now): Congress Votes for a Forty-Five Day Extension

Saturday night, just before midnight, the President signed a temporary funding bill to avoid a government shutdown with little time to spare after Congress rushed to approve the bipartisan deal. The money will fund the government until November 17 at 2023 levels. 

That means Congress will have to get back to work and come together to avoid a shutdown in November. With many proposed cuts still on the table, we know our work is not done here.

Although this short-term deal keeps the spending agreed to by the Speaker and the President in May in place (the deal that kept cuts from happening to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid that our union fought so hard against), we know these proposals will again be an issue.

Extremists in the House have been pushing a budget that gives tax cuts to the wealthy in exchange for drastic cuts to key programs. We expect more of the same going forward.
