(Pittsburgh) – United Steelworkers (USW) International President Tom Conway issued the following statement today after the White House interagency Task Force on Worker Organizing and Empowerment issued its findings:

“When President Biden took office last year, he made it clear that his administration would take an all-of-government approach to enacting pro-worker policies, including helping more workers access their rights to organize and bargain collectively.

“After a robust investigation, in which the USW gladly offered its input and feedback, President Biden’s Task Force on Worker Organizing and Empowerment now has recommendations for rolling back decades of rampant economic inequality and increasing worker power.

“Common sense proposals like drawing on the power of federal offices to help workers better understand their rights and coordinating across agencies to enforce existing labor laws will work to reset the balance of power and pave the way for workers to achieve better wages, safer working conditions and more secure retirements.

“The USW applauds the Biden administration’s continuing commitment to ensuring workers have a voice – in their workplaces and in our federal government. We’re excited to continue working with the administration as they start putting these task force recommendations into action.”

The USW represents 850,000 workers employed in metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and the energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of workers in health care, public sector, higher education, tech and service occupations.
